Assessment of Factors Influencing Students’ Participation in Physical and Health Education in Secondary Schools in The Federal Capital Territory

This quantitative research study aims to understand the factors that influence the participation of secondary school students and teachers in Physical and Health Education (PHE) in public schools located in the Federal Capital Territory. The study involved a sample of 150 students and 20 PHE teachers, selected using a stratified random sampling technique to ensure diversity in the participant groups. Data collection was primarily done through a structured four-point Likert scale questionnaire, which evaluated level of participation, factors and barriers to engagement in PHE programmes. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted to summarise and analyse the data obtained. ANOVA was used to test for significant impacts of different factors on student participation in PHE, including student-related, teacher-related, and institution-related factors. The findings of the study indicate that teacher-related and institution-related factors have a significant impact on participation in physical and health education among secondary school students, while student-related factors were not found to be determinants. The study also found that the perceived importance of physical and health education, availability of facilities, and support from teachers and peers were the key factors influencing students’ participation in the subject. Based on these findings, the study recommends enhancing the importance of PHE in the curriculum, improving facilities and resources for physical and health education, and fostering greater collaboration between teachers and students to promote participation. Implementing these recommendations could potentially enhance student engagement and overall participation in physical and health education in secondary schools.

A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW: THE IMPACT OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING MODEL IMPLEMENTATION ON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED THROUGH VOSViewer IN THE GOOGLE SCHOLAR DATABASE

Education involves the dynamic exchange between educators and students in the instructional context. Conversely, project-based learning represents an instructional paradigm that integrates projects into the learning journey, with these projects encompassing both individual and group undertakings. Collaboratively pursued within defined temporal boundaries, such projects culminate in concrete outcomes. This study seeks to investigate the potential impact of project-based learning approaches on the participation of secondary school students. The systematic literature review method is employed to comprehensively evaluate existing research in this domain. By exploring the effects of project-based learning, the study sheds light on its role in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. This investigation contributes to the ongoing discourse on innovative pedagogical strategies and their efficacy in the context of modern education.

Ortaokul öğrencilerinin temel demokratik değerler düzeyinin belirlenmesi

The purpose of this research is to determine the participation of secondary school students in the basic democratic values. Survey method was used in the research. In this context, 227 secondary school students in Samsun Ondokuzmayıs district were reached by using the purposeful sampling method. The research data were collected online with the Basic Democratic Values Scale, with the permission of the author. In the analysis of the data, tests such as T-test, One-Way ANOVA, Post Hoc-Tukey were used with the help of SPSS 21 program. As a result of the analysis and interpretation of the findings, it has been determined that the basic democratic values of the secondary school students are at a good level, and there is no relationship between their family income status, student gender and democratic values. In addition, it was determined that the eighth grade students exhibited more democratic values than the fifth and seventh grade students. It is recommended to examine democratic values at different district and class levels.

FACTORS INFLUENCING SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PARYTICIPATION IN COMPETITIVE SPORTS IN NAIROBI COUNTY A CRITICAL LITERATURE REVIEW

Purpose: The main objective of the study is to determine the factors that influence the participation of secondary school students in competitive sports in Nairobi County, Kenya
 Methodology:  The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature review was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps.
 Findings: The study revealed that social relationships, gender, household income and playing experiences are factors that influence secondary school students’ participation in competitive sports in Nairobi, Kenya.
 Unique Contribution to Theory and Practice: The Ministry of Education, through the county Director of Education should ensure that all secondary schools have basic sports facilities and equipment in order to promote sports participation. Schools principals should ensure every student identifies themselves with a sport.

Participação de jovens-estudantes em escolas do ensino secundário: aprendizados, relações geracionais e inventividade política

This study addresses initiatives concerning training and encouraging the participation of secondary school students. Data originated from the collaborative study Smart citizens for participatory cities (2017-2018), conducted by researchers affiliated to universities in Argentina, Brasil, Spain, and Mexico. The objective of this qualitative study was to understand the “gap existing between youths’ civic experience in the formal education sphere and their lives as citizens.” First, a bibliographic survey was performed on the secondary education structure and public initiatives directed to youth sectors and segments in each participating country. Next, discussion groups were organized in each school, and the students’ sociodemographic data were collected (i.e., nature of the teaching institutions, school year, age group, sex/gender, and whether the students had a paid job). In Brazil, 58 female and male students, aged between 16 and 19, belonging to urban middle-class families living in different cities in the state of São Paulo, participated. Interpretation of pedagogical propositions, school dynamics, and culture intended to train and encourage student participation was based on the sociology of youth and education. How students appropriate these propositions, and the meanings they assigned were also addressed in addition to their learning and experiences participating in school life. In addition to intergenerational tensions and intergenerational inventiveness permeating the actions within schools, this study highlights the critical role adult generations play in the political learning of younger generations.

Instagram and social capital: youth activism in a networked movement

ABSTRACT The extensive participation of secondary school students was one of the features that characterized Hong Kong’s Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement . Lacking the power and resources enjoyed by adults, how do these teenagers organize protest actions? While recent scholarship focuses on how recent youth activism is facilitated by the prevalent use of social media, this article argues that digitally-based, informal social movement groups formed by student activists played a crucial role in unleashing teenage youth’s social capital. By activating their schools’ alumni networks, school reputation and joint-school ties, these digitally-based groups initiated a wide array of collective actions that mobilized scores of teenagers. However, despite forming a decentralized structure, these groups were unequal in terms of their mobilization power. Reputable schools with strong alumni networks and joint-school linkages are more capable of shaping movement narratives and mobilizing territory-wide protest actions. In contrast, schools with weaker social capital are more likely to organize actions with neighbouring schools within local districts and rely on external help. Our findings contribute to social movement studies by demonstrating how teenage youth engage in protests and how informal, Internet-initiated protest organizations play a crucial role in shaping movement dynamics.

Anti-discrimination Activities and the Mode of Teaching in the Opinions of Secondary School Students

Abstract The article examines the issue of anti-discrimination in the context of changes in the teaching mode from classroom to distance schooling. The results of research carried out with the participation of secondary school students will be presented and analysed. The aim of this study is to highlight areas in education that need improvement in order to increase the level of students’ comfort in any teaching conditions.

STEM Lab on a Kitchen Table: An Investigation of Remote Student-Driven Problem-Based Research.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic affected formal and informal education programs in the USA. The pandemic had a devastating impact on programs that required a dedicated physical space and in-person laboratory research. The distinguishing feature of New Hampshire Academy of Science (NHAS) programs is the participation of secondary school students in STEM research projects that emulate university-level research. Moving to a remote format presented various challenges. In this case study, we describe and discuss our experiences transforming a summer STEM research program for secondary school students from on-site and in-person to a remote platform, providing details of the planning phase, the logistics of maintaining the quality of the students' research, and the results of internal and external evaluations. Of the 33 students who participated, 32 completed all central elements of the program, and 25 went further and submitted summary papers and presented their research at the remote annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. External evaluation found that students saw their work as similar to that of professional scientists, and perceived themselves to have gained proficiency in the use of scientific techniques and instrumentation. Students expressed they missed elements of in-person lab work including social interactions.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS, ATTITUDE AND PARTICIPATION AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MOGADISHU-SOMALIA

Environmental degradation poses a major threat to the existence of humanity today both in rural and urban settlements. In such a scenario, the importance and need for environmental education as a tool for environmental management and conservation cannot be overemphasized. To raise environmental literacy level among Somalians, Environmental Education is taught using both interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches. The aim of this study was to establish the level of awareness, attitude and participation of secondary school students in environmental activities in these two different settlements. The study involved a sample of 200 and secondary school students randomly selected from secondary schools in Mogadishu Divisions. Data was primarily collected using researcher developed questionnaires. Analysis of the data was done by first coding them in SPSS version 2016. The study has achieved its objective by drawing a comparison between students in different sections of an urban divide. It was also found out that there is need to refocus the approach of EE in order to ensure that it does not only make learners aware but also create a sense of personal responsibility which is fundamental in ensuring sustainable environmental behavior. The findings of the study may be used by authorities in making priorities in terms of environmental education for various settlements in urban set up. It will also help in tailoring EE approach to make it relevant and responsive to the immediate concerns and responsibilities of students and the entire community by environmental concern.

Contextos de aprendizaje participativos en secundaria

El artículo pretende conceptualizar la participación del alumnado de secundaria y poner de manifiesto qué elementos pueden condicionar dicha participación y como se deberían reconsiderar en un modelo de aprendizaje no presencial. Este artículo se enmarca en una Tesis Doctoral que analiza, desde una aproximación colaborativa, la capacidad de participación de los jóvenes con el objetivo de implementar acciones educativas más democráticas, inclusivas y participativas. Los resultados constatan los beneficios de situar al alumnado como agentes corresponsables en los contextos de aprendizaje participativos y los desafíos que debe afrontar el centro para promover la participación activa del alumnado de secundaria.

Appraisal of Environmental Related Issues in Social Science Subjects in Secondary Schools in Nigeria

Environmental conservation and management should be a vital component of our school curriculum as a way of investing in our youth so that they can be capable custodians of our environment for the sake of environmental management and conservation for sustainability. The youth have great potential which can only be ignored at our nation’s peril. Given that the environment is our greatest heritage, all measures including EE education must be taken serious to ensure that our youth have the correct attitude towards the environment since our very survival depends on this, this should be included in the school curriculum at all level. This research work investigates how environmental education can be used as a tool to create awareness and participation of secondary school students in environmental management and conversation.
 The research design used in this study was descriptive research design of survey type, to examine the curriculum content of secondary school on environmental conservation and management in secondary schools in Ondo State. The population for the study consists of all the secondary school students in Ondo state. Samples of forty-eight (480) students were drawn from ten (10) selected schools by using stratified random sampling technique. Forty-Eight (48) students were drawn from each of the selected schools. The research instrument used for this study was a self-constructed questionnaire for the students of the selected secondary schools. A sect of questionnaire was design, the questionnaire consisted of two sections; A and B: Section A contained the personal data while Section B contained items constructed in four point linkert scale. Findings from the study reveals among others that there are topics related to conservation in social sciences subjects in secondary schools, that majority of teachers are aware of this and also like teaching it. It therefore, recommend that curriculum planners should make topics on environmental issues be made compulsory at all levels of the education.

Factors behind Classroom Participation of Secondary School Students (A Gender Based Analysis)

It is evidence based conclusion that students' classroom participation makes them more motivated, supports their learning, improves their communication and promotes higher order thinking skills. The current study was an intention to investigate the current level of secondary school students' classroom participation and to identify the underlying factors that contribute to it. The study was conducted on 9th and 10th grade students, randomly selected from 19 boys' and 21 girls' government high schools in Lahore city. Sampling process consisted of two stages. In the first stage, 10% sample size was calculated which led to random selection of 4 schools, two from each cohort. At second stage, 500 students were purposively selected from 1689 students, 250 from each cohort. A self-report questionnaire (FBCPS) was used to collect data. Response rate was 70%. Simple descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The study concluded that students exhibit significant level of classroom participation. Further boys participated more in the class as compare to girls, while internal and external factors behind their classroom participation were same, although the extent to which they influence was different. Girls were influenced by motivation in their classroom participation as compared to boys. Boys' participated more due to high self-esteem. Teachers, parents and peers and curriculum are important external factors which supported boys classroom participation more than girls who in turn more influenced by classroom environment.

Examination of the Level of Participation of Secondary School Students in Extracurricular Sports Activities [Burdur Example]

This research aims to determine the level of participation of secondary school students in Burdur in extracurricular sports activities and the issues they experience. 247 secondary school students in Burdur participated in this research. A survey composed of a total of 19 questions developed by Selcuk (2006) was used. In conclusion; when taking into account the factor of which grade secondary school students are in, it has been determined that football and volleyball are the most preferred branches of sport in all grades, and that there are statistically no significant differences between extracurricular sports activities according to which grade students are in.  It has been determined that secondary school students who have participated in the study statistically present no significant differences in their extracurricular sports activities according to the profession of their fathers. It has been determined that the support shown by the families of students participating in the study in terms of their engagement in sports, statistically demonstrates no significant difference according to the number of people in the family. It has been determined that the support shown by the families of students participating in the study in terms of their engagement in sports, statistically demonstrates no significant difference according to the profession of their mothers. It has been observed that the rate of support given for engaging in sport by families of participants whose mothers are white collar workers are higher than other families. It has been determined that statistically, there are significant differences between extracurricular sports activities secondary school students engage in, according to their genders. It was found that the changes in academic status during the which secondary school students participate in extracurricular sports competitions statistically demonstrates no significant difference according to their genders.

Five years of fair science

Participation of secondary school students in science fairs in the Waikato region over the period 1990-1995 decreased, while that of intermediate school age students increased at a faster rate. This trend occurred against a background of the preparation and presentation of a fair exhibit being increasingly used as a component of formal science education, rather than an out-of-school and voluntary activity. In general, exhibits on a biological theme are favoured by girls, exhibits related to physical science by boys, with none being particularly drawn to exhibits related to technology. The presentation of group exhibits is more pronounced among girls, especially in the biological sciences.The choice of exhibits is apparently student-directed but there is evidence that the organisational culture of some schools not only fosters participation but encourages participation in particular subject areas. When the exhibits are grouped into output classes used by the Foundation for Research in Science and Technology's Public Good Science Fund, it is clear that the priority areas for research policy makers are not those that students find of interest. Possibly related to this is the near inverse relationship between the overall relative popularity of life sciences, physical sciences, and technology exhibits and the relative proportions of employment in those areas.The role of science fairs in both formal and informal science education may have implications for the appeal and attractiveness of science, both as a school subject and as an employment destination.

Teacher Factors That Influence Secondary School Student Participation in Lodwar, Turkana County, Kenya

The pivotal role played by education to growth and development of an individual cannot be underestimated. In spite of this, some regions in Kenya, Turkana County included, still experience low level of participation in education. Many factors have been attributed to this phenomenon. However, few studies have addressed the teacher factors influencing the level of participation of secondary school students in school. The study therefore focused on establishing this using descriptive survey design. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 200 students from 8 schools in Lodwar, Turkana County. The study established that teacher qualification, personal characteristics and their role in motivating learners to work hard enhance student performance and shape their decisions about the future. However, there was neither gender nor grade level difference in students determining teacher factors contributing to level of participation. The study recommends that the government should encourage the training of teachers to incorporate not only skills related to pedagogy, but also other skills that necessitate them to work effectively and efficiently.

The purpose of this article is to inquire the relation between the social trust and social participation of secondary school students. The results show that the degree of social trust and social participation of secondary school students is low and the corelation value between social trust and social participation is low. If the social trust is fundamental elements of the social participation and citizenship, we must prepare the citizenship education for improving the social trust.
